Tracing your roots and finding your family tree can be a fun and challenging hobby.  However, it can take months and even years to complete your genealogy.  The use of the Internet makes it much easier to find information about your family and enables you to build your family tree online.  There are plenty of ways to locate information online.  Many sites also allow you to build your family tree online. You can locate genealogy sites by searching online.  There are several large sites that are quite popular.  The online genealogy sites provide compilations of many of the databases that are found other places. This helps you to more easily build your family tree online. 

 

Searching Records Online

There are many other ways to research and build family tree online.  You can search through many of the public records online free of charge.  Begin by filling in the names of all the relatives you know.  You will need as much information about them as possible to assist you in searching for them online.  Eventually you'll want to have their date of birth, date of marriage, name of spouse, list of children and date of death.  It will also help in your search to know where they lived. 

Public records are a great way to find information online.  The more you know about someone, the better your chances will be of locating the information that you want. Local county facilities usually have access to birth records, marriage records and death records.  If the person was in the military, you may be able to obtain military records.  The census is also a great way to locate people.  The census was taken every ten years.  You can find census records that may show the family names, the address, names of family members and even the occupation of the adults at the time. 

Records are kept more accurately today due to the use of computers.  Before computers, records were kept by hand and were often misplaced or misfiled.  In addition, many courthouses lost records that are very old when they moved or as they expanded or even due to fire.  Many of the older records are now being input into computers for access online.  However, most people who are trying to build their family tree online will need to become detectives of their family history.

 

Storing Records Online

As you find information, be sure to record it immediately.  If you are using an online program, keep a written or printed document as a backup.  You will want to keep a notebook that you can use to go back to as you find more information.  Finding facts is a process that can take many hours of research.  When you use the Internet to keep your genealogy history, you can share the information with other family members and can get their help as well. Piecing together your family genealogy is like putting a large puzzle together.  Each piece you get brings you closer to having the full story.
